Affordable Housing

The City Council approved $7.9 million last week to support three affordable housing initiatives in Winston-Salem.

  • Happy Hills: The Housing Authority of Winston-Salem (HAWS) donated 13 lots on which Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County will construct single-family homes. The City Council approved Habitat’s request for $2.16 million in grant funding.

  • Indiana Avenue: Wynnefield Forward, LLC received $4.85 million of gap financing to develop 180 rental housing units near Indiana Avenue and Bethabara Road. The housing will consist of (27) one-bedroom, (81) two-bedroom, and (72) three-bedroom units.

  • Cleveland Avenue Homes: The City Council approved nearly $900,000 in grants for making appearance improvements to homes surrounding the Cleveland Avenue Homes community.

  • Pumpkins and Wine - Come to Raylen Vineyards & Winery dressed in your best Halloween costume and enjoy an evening of pumpkin carving, live music, and delicious food. 5-9 PM

  • Halloween Ball - Dress in your Victorian-themed Halloween costume and come to Körner’s Folly for a Spiritualist scavenger hunt, hors d’oeuvres, classic Victorian parlor games, and more. 6:30-10 PM

  • Book Sale - The Friends of the Lewisville Library are holding their fall book sale, which will include CDs, DVDs, magazines, jewelry, and puzzles. Also available Saturday.

  • Booery Halloween Party - Enjoy haunted “booery” tours, a costume contest, beer voting, and live music at Foothills Brewing Tasting Room. 7 PM - 12 AM

  • Outdoor Movie - a/peture presents a showing of Casper at Crossnore with food trucks onsite. Movie starts at dark. ~7:30 PM

  • House Hangs - Hang out at SECCA and enjoy a live DJ, conversation, cocktails, and dinner prepared by a local chef. 5-8 PM

  • A Brassy Halloween - The North Carolina Brass Band presents a Halloween special concert at Salem College. Kids 12 and under are free. 7:30 PM*

  • Storytime + Costume Party - Bookmarks is hosting its first-ever “Holly-ween” with an author reading, trunk or treat, potion making, and more. 10:30 AM

  • Boo! at Bethabara - Listen to ghostly tales, meet “spirits” from Bethabara’s past, and make a scarecrow at Historic Bethabara Park. 1:30-4:30 PM

  • Fun Fest - Forsyth County Government brings a bookmobile, fire truck tour, job fair, and more to the Health and Human Services Campus. 11 AM - 2 PM

  • Mystery Reading - Enjoy readings and discussion on the Smith & Libby mystery with Philip Archer at The Bookhouse. 6:30 PM

  • Spooky Skeleton Market - Shop at the Winston Junction Market from artists and makers dressed up in costume. They’ll also have candy for the kids! 11 AM - 4 PM

  • Harlem Nights - Journey back in time and enjoy melodies spanning from the 20s to the 90s at The Enterprise Center. 7 PM

  • Superhero Trunk or Treat - Fly over to Bolton Park for a community event benefitting Special Olympic athletes. 12 PM

  • Ghoul Moon Festival - Join the West Salem Art Hotel for live music, visual and performing art, vendors, and more. 4-10 PM

  • Main Street 5K - Run through the streets and parks of Mocksville to support GO FAR and Smart Start of Davie County. 8 AM

  • Kids Spooky Party - Westbend Bar & Venue has bounce houses, a costume contest, and Halloween-themed games. 10 AM - 4 PM

  • Neighborhood Market - Bar Nola’s last local vendor market of the season has 30 vendors plus candy at each booth. Costumes encouraged! 12-5 PM

  • Boo-tique Crawl - Explore all the boutique shops in downtown Kernersville for the chance to win a prize. 11 AM - 4 PM

  • DADA Trick or Treat - Bring the kids for Trick or Treat in the Arts District. 12-5 PM

Sunday, October 29

  • Suds for Shalom - The Shalom Project is partnering with Wise Man Brewing for their fall fundraiser. Stop by the brewery to participate in a silent auction and support poverty alleviation programs. 12-5 PM

  • HalloWheels - Grab your bike and costume for the haunted woods ride at Hobby Park. Biking activities also available on Monday and Tuesday.

  • Kaeideum Truck and Treat - Kaleideum will have science demonstrations, a balloon artist, specialty vehicles, and more as part of their fundraiser event. 1-5 PM

  • Leaf Collection: Winston-Salem announced that leaf collection season will start on October 30. This year, collections will take place in two quadrants of the city at a time.

  • Art Project: People of all ages are invited to join artist Raman Bhardwaj in painting the mural wall at Senior Services’ Intergenerational Center for Arts and Wellness. There will be one-hour time slots for painting on October 27 and 28.

  • Open House: Now that all its tenants are officially open, Walnut & Broad is hosting its first-ever open house. Specials will be available at each of the small businesses on October 26.

  • Girls Expo: Learning Everyday Accomplishing Dreams (LEAD) provides tools and resources to low-income/at-risk preteen girls to help them become productive citizens and leaders. The annual LEAD Girls Expo teaches girls about STEAM careers, financial health, mental wellness, and decision-making skills. This year’s Expo takes place this weekend, October 27-28.

Local company Three Strands Recovery Wear has created the Resilience Bra. Founder Leah Wyrick created this patent-pending, post-operative bra for women who have had mastectomies, breast reconstruction, and other breast-related cosmetic surgeries.

  • Who: Wyrick is a recent Wake Forest University graduate who started Three Strands during her freshman year.

  • Why? Wyrick’s mother’s breast cancer diagnosis and complications with drains and bra discomfort inspired Wyrick to partner with Dr. Samuel Roy to create the Resilience Bra.

  • Today: The Resilience Bra recently had a successful pilot test and acquired its first wholesale partner, The American Cancer Society's affiliate program, TLC. TLC will begin carrying the Resilience Bra in 2024.
