Run For Joy
The annual NC Association of Nurse Anesthetists (NCANA) Run for Joy 5K in Winston-Salem supports mental health advocacy and wellness for healthcare trainees in memory of a Wake Forest Medical Student.
Background: The NCANA Run for Joy 5K was created in memory of healthcare student Katelyn Joy Beardsley, who died by suicide two months prior to graduating from Wake Forest University School of Medicineās Nurse Anesthesia program.
Why: Medical trainees continue to face significant mental health concerns, with numerous studies revealing high rates of mental distress among medical students, but stigma stops them from getting help. Run for Joy seeks to combat this stigma and support the mental wellness of healthcare trainees.
When: The NCANA Run for Joy 5K takes place Saturday, October 21 at 9 AM at Jamison Park.

ā”ļø Piedmont Federal is helping students achieve their dreams of higher education with two $1,000 scholarships. This scholarship is open to high school seniors who plan to attend a private or public college or university. Applications must be submitted by February 1, 2024.*

Other News
Volunteering Opportunity: Love Out Loud is planning the 16th annual Christmas for the City and needs volunteers to help finalize details for the events/attractions. This is a great way to get involved in a community-wide event!
Triad Restaurants: The annual Eat. Drink. Restaurant Week highlights locally-owned restaurants, craft breweries, and cocktail bars. The campaign runs from October 23-29 and features specials at participating restaurants.
Housing: Habitat for Humanity Forsyth has been selected to contribute to the renewal of Happy Hill, the oldest African-American neighborhood in the city. The renewal involves constructing 13 new energy-efficient homes, which is the initial phase of creating affordable housing in Happy Hill.
Financial Report: The Arts Council of Winston-Salem & Forsyth County recently announced that Forsyth Countyās nonprofit arts and culture industry generated $196.3 million last year.
Homecomings: Wake Forest University and Winston-Salem State University are celebrating homecoming this weekend. This is WSSUās first homecoming weekend in over four years. See the full event schedule.
Construction: The second location of Bobby Boy Bakeshop is in the works. The new location will be in Salem Bottleworks, a redevelopment and restoration of the old Coca-Cola Bottling Plant in West Salem. There is no information on when the new location will open.
Traveling Exhibit: Triad Cultural Arts is presenting the āNavigating Jim Crow: The Green Book and Oasis Spaces in North Carolinaā exhibit through November 18 at The Enterprise Center. The exhibit highlights significant sites related to American travel during the era of the Jim Crow laws.
