New Forsyth County Courthouse Opens
The ribbon cutting for the new Forsyth County Courthouse is tomorrow, Thursday, October 12.
Background: The new courthouse is replacing the Hall of Justice on Main Street that opened in 1974. This will be the fifth courthouse in the county’s history.
Changes: The new courthouse will be 250,000 square feet, 80,000 more than the Hall of Justice. Additional improvements include:
Easier-to-navigate layout for courtrooms
Rooms for defendants to consult with their attorneys
More parking, including a public lot across the street
Single location on the first floor for most of the Clerk of Court’s services
Secure tunnel for transferring inmates between the courthouse and the detention center
Behind the Scenes: Samet Corporation and Balfour-Beatty were the construction managers and CJMW Architecture was the architect.
Opening: The courthouse will officially open on Monday, October 23.

Volunteering: Piedmont Federal volunteered at Habitat ReStore earlier this week by organizing the store for the holidays! Historic Tool: The Historic Resources Commission launched an online tool to help people identify former Green Book sites. The story map contains information about the people who owned and ran the businesses, what the businesses looked like, where they were located, and what happened to them.
Award: Summit Street Inns received the Gertrude S. Carraway Awards of Merit from Preservation NC. The award recognizes Winston-Salem Historic Inns' commitment to historic preservation.
Company Expansion: Purple Crow, a Hispanic product distributor, is acquiring property in Whitaker Park where it will establish a new food distribution headquarters. The project will cost $50 million and generate nearly 200 new jobs.
Beautification Challenge: The City of Winston-Salem Neighborhood Services Department is seeking nominations for the 2023 Fall Beautification Challenge. Winners will have made an outstanding effort in beautifying their property/neighborhood either through decorative landscaping, porch décor, or renovations.
Change in Ownership: RayLen Vineyards & Winery recently announced its sale to JW and Kristen Ray of JOLO Winery & Vineyards. The Mocksville winery will be rebranded to Rayson Winery and Vineyards.
Housing: Winston-Salem leaders are on track to add 750 affordable housing units by the end of 2023. According to Fox 8, the city council has approved 216 units in the Northeast Ward and is about to approve another 180 multi-family units in the North Ward.
