What: The extension will run 1.3 miles along an inactive rail line from Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive to 25th Street.
Timeline: The design phase will take less than a year. Construction will begin in late 2025 and be completed in late 2026.
Background: Long Branch Trail opened in 2018, running 1.7 miles from Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive through the Innovation Quarter to Salem Creek Greenway. This extension will make the trail 3 miles long.
Why it Matters: This project is one of the ways Winston-Salem is working toward becoming a more connected city with walkable trails. Additionally, the extension could encourage developers to transform the deserted industrial buildings along the path into usable spaces.
