  • 🎓 Proclamation: The City of Winston-Salem has declared Friday, September 27, as “Winston-Salem State University Day.” The proclamation highlights WSSU’s contributions to the city, which date back to the school’s founding in 1892 as Slater Industrial Academy.

A Presidential Visit

The president of Liberia, Joseph N. Boakai, Sr., will be a special guest at the Liberian Organization of the Piedmont’s inaugural International Liberation Gala on Saturday, September 28!

  • What: The Gala at the Benton Convention Center will commemorate the release of ~16,000 enslaved Africans from Salem, their immigration to Liberia, and the relationship between Winston-Salem and Liberia as sister cities.

  • Who: The 26th president of Liberia, President Joseph N. Boakai, Sr. was sworn into office on January 22, 2024.


  • Why It Matters: The Gala will raise funds for the International Liberation Student Housing Facility in Happy Hill, which will provide housing for international students earning their college degrees in North Carolina.
