Calling all bookworms! The 19th annual Bookmarks Festival of Books & Authors takes place September 26-29 in downtown Winston-Salem.

  • What: The Bookmarks Festival is the largest book festival in the Carolinas with keynotes, book signings, and panels featuring internationally acclaimed authors.

  • Backstory: The Bookmarks Festival started in 2004 and later expanded into a literary arts non-profit organization and independent bookstore, which both operate under the name Bookmarks.

  • Events:

  • Author Visit - Meet Vernon Glenn at The Bookhouse as he launches Slim and None, the final book in his trilogy about a North Carolina attorney. 6 PM

  • Stage Show - Watch the Winston-Salem Theatre Alliance’s performance of My Sister In This House, a psychological drama-thriller. Runs through Sunday.

  • Brantley Gilbert - The country rock singer performs at LJVM Coliseum as part of the Off the Rails Tour! 7 PM

  • Bookmarks Opening Keynote - TJ Klune discusses his new book, Somewhere Beyond the Sea, at First Baptist on Fifth. 6:30 PM

  • Swap & Style - Bring three apparel or accessory items to the Delta Fine Arts Center to swap with other fashion lovers! 6:30 PM

Friday, September 27

  • Movie Night - A/peture hosts a screening of The Incredibles at Crossnore! Bring a lawn chair or blanket and grab a burger from the Sliders food truck. Pre-movie activities start at 6:30 PM, movie starts at dusk.

  • Cricket Nest’s Fall Festival - Find unique hand-crafted and upcycled goods at South Fork Community Center. Runs through Saturday.

  • Books & Bites - Meet the Bookmarks Festival featured authors early, skip the Saturday signing lines, and enjoy light bites at the Benton Convention Center! 7 PM

  • Salsa Dance Social - Join SonCaribe Latin Dance at the Coal Pit for a beginners dance class, followed by a night of social dancing! 7-11 PM

  • Comedy & Brewpub Tour - Climb aboard the “jolly trolley” for a hilarious trip around town featuring an onboard comedy show and a tasting at a local brewpub. 7 PM

  • Cooking Class - Learn to make the perfect homemade pizza and salad at Southern Home & Kitchen. 12-1 PM

  • House Hangs - Bring your friends and meet new people at NCMA Winston-Salem (formerly SECCA) as DJ Prez spins tunes and Native Root serves a delicious dinner. 5-8 PM

  • Drive-in Movie - Watch The Little Mermaid (2023 version) at Davie County Community Park. Concessions provided by Lemon ‘N’ Dough and Sno Biz! Movie starts at dusk.

  • Runway Shows - Discover the latest looks for fall and winter at Winston-Salem Fashion Week’s opening night at Truist Stadium. 6:30 PM

  • Update: Salem Bottleworks, the redevelopment of the Coca-Cola Bottling Plant in West Salem, is still underway! Salem Bottling LLC plans to have one of the restaurant spaces completed by the end of the year. For a refresher on the planned renovations, check out our article.

  • Opening: Blowouts & Bubbles opens at 431 West End Blvd on Wednesday, September 25! The luxury blow dry bar offers various blowouts, updo styling, scalp massage, braid styling, and more. This will be the Blowouts & Bubbles’ second location, with its first located in Greensboro.

  • Leasing: The Lofts at Whitaker Park is nearly complete and already leasing. C.A. Harrison Company has transformed two historic R.J. Reynolds tobacco factory buildings into an apartment complex with 163 loft-style units. Amenities include a seasonal saltwater pool, bowling alley, and 24-hour fitness center.

  • Community: Project Homeless Connect will take place on Wednesday, September 25, at the Liberty Street Urban Farmer’s Market pavilion. The event will connect individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness with essential services and support.

  • Arts: NCMA Winston-Salem is looking for three artists to create murals in West End and Waughtown that reflect what they love most about living in Forsyth County. The deadline to apply is Sunday, October 13.
