Arts: The founder of a/peture, Lawren Desai, is resigning from her position as Executive Director & Curator. She will remain in her role through the end of 2024. Along with this announcement, the non-profit theatre revealed it only has funds to continue operating through the end of the year. A/peture is seeking to raise $100,000 by December 31, 2024, to continue day-to-day operations in 2025.
University: Wake Forest University School of Divinity received a $3.3 million gift, the second-largest gift the School of Divinity has ever received. The gift will support Wake Div Promise, an initiative that will provide full-tuition scholarships for all graduate students enrolled in the Master of Divinity program.
Baseball: Do you remember when the Winston-Salem Dash rebranded as the Winston-Salem Hype Hens this summer? The rebrand has been nominated for the Best Alternate Identity in Minor League Baseball! You can vote up to 100 times daily through Monday, September 23 - the winner will be revealed at the MiLB Awards Show on September 30.
Event: The president of Liberia, Joseph Nyuma Boakai, will attend the Liberian Organization of the Piedmont’s inaugural International Liberation Gala. The Gala commemorates the release of enslaved Africans from Salem, their return to Liberia, and the relationship between Winston-Salem and Liberia. It will take place at the Benton Convention Center on Saturday, September 28.
College: Salem College experienced record-breaking growth in its undergraduate enrollment for the third consecutive year with a 10% increase in students. The Class of 2028 is comprised of 137 students from 19 states and 11 countries.
Parking: The Department of Transportation is holding public hearings regarding upgrading the city’s parking meters to a mobile application and increasing parking fees. The public hearings are on Wednesday, September 18, from 11 AM - 2 PM at Kaleideum and Monday, September 23, from 5-7:30 PM at the Benton Convention Center.
