On Monday, we asked you which statement about Moravian stars was false. “Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist’s star is 18 feet tall” was false—only 10% of you got the answer correct!

The star sitting atop the hospital is actually 31 feet tall. In conjunction with a donation drive for western NC, the hospital set up and lit the massive star early this year. Keep reading to learn more about this iconic Winston-Salem decoration!

  • The Points: Moravian stars traditionally have 25-26 points, though some stars have up to 110 points!

  • History: According to tradition, the star began as a geometry project in Moravian boarding schools in 19th-century Germany.

  • Meaning: The star is a reminder of how God’s light shines in the darkness and also represents the star the wise men followed to reach the infant Jesus in the nativity story.

  • Where Can I Find One? You can find Moravian stars at multiple locations in Winston-Salem, like the Old Salem Museums & Gardens, Dewey’s Bakery, Wilkerson Moravian Bakery, and Lot 63.
