🇺🇸 Memorial Day Ceremony
Monday, May 27 is Memorial Day. Honor those who lost their lives while serving our country at the 10th annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the Carolina Field of Honor in Triad Park.
What: The ceremony is open to the public and will feature a color guard, the Navy Band, special music, a wreath laying, the playing of Taps, and other commemorative activities. Former Governor Pat McCrory will speak at the event.
Background: The Carolina Field of Honor opened in 2014, and outside of Washington D.C., it is the largest memorial honoring veterans on the East Coast. Over 4,000 veterans are enshrined at the monument.
When: Preliminary music played by the Navy Band begins at 10:40 AM, and the formal ceremony begins at 11 AM.

Documentary - Watch a screening of Imogen Cunningham: Portrait of Imogen at the Reynolda House Museum. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Imogen’s granddaughter - and the filmmaker behind the project - Meg Partridge. 2 PM
Decorating - Decorate cookies and enjoy delicious ice cream at this family-friendly event at The Canvas Cake Studio. Various start times from 11 AM - 4 PM.
Lavender Spotlight - Learn how lavender can be used in various culinary recipes at My Garden Blooms. Finish the class by making a vase arrangement from the Flower Bar! 2 PM
Gears & Guitars - Get ready for a day full of Fondo rides, Criterium races, and five free concerts (including The Fray!) at Bailey Park. 8 AM - 9 PM
Kids Cooking Class - The kids are cooking dinner tonight! This Southern Home & Kitchen class teaches kids how to make healthy dishes like zucchini lasagna rolls and Greek salad. Recommended for children ages 7-12. 10 AM
Storytime - Head to Bookmarks for a reading of Paletero Man + fun activities! 10:30 AM

Opening: Sushi Rosé celebrates its grand opening this Saturday, May 25! The restaurant will serve Japanese-Peruvian cuisine and handcrafted cocktails at 247 E 5th Street.
Summer: Several public swimming pools open on Saturday, May 25. These include the pools at Bolton Park, Kimberly Park, Long Creek, and Winston Waterworks.
Ranking: Winston-Salem fell from No. 41 to No. 60 in the U.S. News “Best Places to Live in the U.S. in 2024-2025” list. Even though our city dropped 19 spots, its 6.4 rating didn’t change from last year’s rating. A few of the other North Carolina cities on the list were Charlotte (No. 5), Raleigh (No. 6), and Greensboro (No. 23).
Education: The Magnet Schools Assistant Program (MSAP) has granted Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools $14.6 million for Project Revitalize. The project will help create new International Baccalaureate/Dual Language Immersion programs at Konnoak Elementary and Flat Rock Middle Schools.
Construction: Forsyth Technical Community College launched a groundbreaking project at their Silas Creek Campus with "Demo Day." Demolition for a new 3-acre quad will start soon, creating a courtyard with an outdoor event space, walking paths, and enhanced accessibility. The project also includes the development of a modern "Learning Commons" to support innovative learning and research.

The Prize
The winner will receive $25,000, appear on the cover of Taste of Home magazine, and have the opportunity to cook with Chef Carla Hall!

Justin Webster, the founder/owner of Heff’s Burger Club. Justin said he would use the prize money to expand Heff’s brand, give his staff bonuses, and replace worn-down equipment.
Jordan Rainbolt, the chef behind Native Root. Jordan said she would use the prize money to create a permanent space for Native Root.
Christopher Brown, one of Cristina Gray’s chefs in High Point, said he would use the prize money to bring his restaurant idea to life.
Victoria Manginas of Zito! Pizzeria & Grill. Victoria said she would use the prize money to open her own Greek restaurant.
Voting
You can vote once a day for free or choose to donate to increase your number of votes. The first round of voting closes on May 30 and will determine which 20 competitors move forward in the competition.
The winner of the competition will be announced in early August.
