  • What: The Peter Oliver Pavilion Gallery will be a public outdoor space that tells the story of Peter Oliver and his impact on the city. The Pavilion Gallery will sit at the end of the Strollway Bridge, adjacent to MUSE Winston-Salem.

  • Who: Peter Oliver was an enslaved man who was sold to the Moravians in 1786. He became a skilled potter and worked with the Moravian Church to win his freedom in 1800. He spent the rest of his life in Salem with his family and farmed the land where the Pavilion Gallery will be.

  • When: Creative Corridors Coalition worked with world-renowned African-American designer Walter Hood to develop plans for the Pavilion Gallery. The organization hopes to begin construction in 2025 and has not shared when the project is expected to be completed.

  • Why It Matters: The Peter Oliver Pavilion Gallery will be the first public space in Winston-Salem to tell the story of one person’s journey from enslavement to freedom.
