Did you know one of the first official Independence Day celebrations was held in Salem Square in 1783?

  • Background: On May 16, 1783, North Carolina Governor Alexander Martin proclaimed that the Fourth of July would be a day of solemn thanksgiving to God.

  • What Happened: On July 4, 1783, the Moravians at Salem observed the day with trombone music, church services, singing, and partaking in a Lovefeast.

  • Check it out: You can find a plaque in the middle of Salem Square commemorating the historic event, which was unveiled on Salem’s 200th anniversary in 1966.
