The Go-To Winston-Salem

July 10, 2024

Happy Birthday, Krispy Kreme!

Krispy Kreme’s 87th birthday is July 13! Did you know the international doughnut chain started in Winston-Salem?

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts
  • The Beginning: Vernon Rudolph opened the first Krispy Kreme in Old Salem in 1937. Originally, he only sold the doughnuts to local grocery stores but eventually began offering them hot and fresh to customers on the street.

  • Today: Krispy Kreme now has 377 locations in the US and is in more than 35 countries! Even though the original store was torn down, you can find a plaque in Old Salem commemorating the place where it stood.

  • Celebrate: In honor of its birthday, you can buy a dozen Original Glazed doughnuts and spend an additional $.87 to get a second dozen on Friday, July 12.

HanesBrands

The apparel company plans to move its corporate offices to the Park Building at 101 N Cherry Street downtown.

  • The Reason: The relocation comes as the company is downsizing.

  • What’s Next: HanesBrands will move to its new location in early 2025.

Carolina University

The private Christian university has purchased HanesBrands’ current campus and will begin using the space once the company moves out in early 2025.
