Is learning about different cultures or picking up a new language part of your New Year's resolutions? The Vecino Center for Language and Culture is the perfect place to start your international learning journey!

  • What: The Vecino Center hosts classes and events centered on languages and cultural traditions from around the world. Past events have included dance classes, food tastings, conversation hours, and language classes.

  • Backstory: Founder Alexa is a local ESL teacher who has learned about different cultures and languages from her international students; the Vecino Center is her way of bringing that same experience to Winston-Salem.

  • Get Involved: The Vecino Center has various upcoming events and classes, including beginner and intermediate Spanish classes, French conversation hour, and Mexican cooking classes.

  • Where: Each event is hosted at a different local business.

Tuesday, January 9

  • Pitch-Space LIVE - Listen to pitches from technology startups with feedback from a panel of investors at Flywheel Coworking. 5 PM*

  • Trail Walk - Explore the Black Walnut Bottoms trail while learning about winter plants from the trail guide. 10 AM

  • Fit4Baby Class - Attend a free class at Taylor Physical Therapy and Wellness to learn what you can expect during the Forsyth County Fit4Baby Spring Program. 5:30 PM

  • Pickleball League - Foothill Brewing Tasting Room brings back its weekly league for 2024. No experience or equipment is necessary, and the court will be heated. 5:30-8:30 PM

  • Dance Lessons - Latin Dance Tuesdays return to East of Texas with weekly bachata or kizomba lessons. 6 PM

  • Book Launch - Join Bookmarks to celebrate author Kristen Dwyer’s new young adult novel, The Atlas of Us. 6:30 PM

Wednesday, January 10

  • Womenpreneur Wednesday - Head to Bailey Power Plant for pop-up coworking and the chance to network with fellow women. 9 AM - 3 PM

Thursday, January 11

  • New Exhibition - Delta Arts Center hosts the opening reception for its "Invitational 2024 @ DAC" juried exhibition. 6-8 PM

  • DIY Workshop - Create wind chimes from beach glass at Radar Brewing Company. 6 PM

  • Trivia Night - Are you a fan of The Office? Test your knowledge at Kernersville Brewing Company’s trivia night. 7 PM

  • Game Night - Vecino Center hosts an English/Spanish language exchange at Pink Moon Cafe. All skill levels are welcome. 7:30 PM

  • Hockey Game - Cheer on the Carolina Thunderbirds as they face off against the Blue Ridge Bobcats at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds. 7:35 PM

  • New Location: Fancy Groceries, a fine clothing and goods store, will close its current location within Ardmore Barbershop as it prepares to move into its new home at 562 N Trade Street.

  • Government: The City of Winston-Salem is spending $40,000 to operate a white-flag shelter run by City with Dwellings. At the shelter, up to 40 people experiencing homelessness can be protected from freezing temperatures.


  • Save the Date: Mixed Doubles, a series of tandem lectures on unrelated topics, returns to Forsyth County Central Library after nearly four years! The new season kicks off on January 25.


  • Arts: The Arts Council announced the resignation of its President and CEO, Chase Law. Law, who joined The Arts Council in December 2020, will continue in her role until February 16.


  • New Owners: CafĂ© Arthur’s is under new ownership. The new partners also own Cagney’s Kitchen and have not announced any plans to make changes to the café’s menu or staff.
