🗣️ Remembering a Legacy

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday, January 20. Did you know the civil rights leader visited Winston-Salem on two separate occasions?

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke at Wait Chapel on Wake Forest University’s campus on October 11, 1962. He returned to Winston-Salem two years later to speak at Goler Metropolitan AME Zion Church on April 13, 1964.

• Winter Wonderland - Bring the whole family to Childress Vineyards for live music, samples, and a meet and greet with the “Frost Sisters”! 10 AM - 7 PM

• A Cappella Jam - Listen to RJ Reynolds A Capella and college groups perform at Reynolds Auditorium! 7 PM

• Stage Show - Camel City Playhouse presents “Beyond Therapy,” a comedy in which Prudence and Bruce look for love with the help of their therapists. Show runs through January 26.

• Basketball - Cheer on the Rams as they take on Claflin at the C.E. Gaines Center. The game theme is Throwback Day, so wear your throwback WSSU gear and colors! Women at 2 PM, men at 4 PM.

• Welding Class - This one’s for your teen. Learn the basics of welding and its creative applications at Mixxer. Open to students grades 9th-12th. 9 AM

• Arts Yard Sale - Shop for gently used art and craft supplies at South Fork Community Center. 12-3 PM

• Soap Making Workshop - Craft 6 bars of soap at Lizzie’s All Natural Products! 2 PM

Sunday, January 19

• Cocktail Class - Join Easytalk at the bar to learn how they make the perfect espresso martini. 4 PM

• Adoption Event - Meet adoptable dogs and puppies from The Haley Graves Foundation NC at Tucker’s Tap Yard! 1-4 PM

• 🌹 DIY: Sophisticated Florals released its winter class schedule! The first class—Airplant and Crystal Terrariums—will be on Thursday, January 30. Sophisticated Florals is a full-service florist run by Winston-Salem native Stephanie Karadzhov.
  
  

• 🎾 Impact: The Winston-Salem Open donated $25,000 to support local middle school athletics and community tennis programs. The contribution came from a portion of proceeds from the 2024 Winston-Salem Open. Since COVID, the Winston-Salem Open has donated over $100,000.
  
  

• 🧥 Give Back: The Salvation Army of Greater Winston-Salem is partnering with A Cleaner World for its Give a Kid a Coat Campaign. The non-profit will distribute coats to kids and adults in need every Thursday through February 13. Want to get involved? Consider donating a coat or making a monetary donation!
  
  

• 🎨 Art: Have you seen Kaleideum’s new art pieces in Liberty Plaza? Known as the “Whispering Dishes,” the dishes amplify sound waves so that a pair of people standing at opposite dishes can hear each other clearly despite the distance! The dishes were painted by local artist, Hieronymus.
  
  

• 🏆 Ranking: Winston-Salem ranked No. 6 on Go Banking Rates “50 Cheapest Places To Retire Across America” list! Winston-Salem was the highest-ranked major city in North Carolina, with a cost of living 18.7% lower than the national average.
