Experience Black history firsthand through virtual reality at Union Station!

The Magnolia Shoebox Lunch N Learn & Traveling While Black Experience

  • How: Participants will wear VR headsets, immersing them in a cinematic experience where historic Black travelers discuss what it was like to travel during the Jim Crow era.

  • When: The experience is available at Union Station every Thursday through Saturday until March 31, 2025.

  • Why It Matters: This innovative use of technology allows The Historic Magnolia at Union Station to share Black history with various communities and people with different learning styles.

  • Bonus: On Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Monday, January 20), The Historic Magnolia at Union Station will offer its learning experience from 9 AM - 2 PM.

Tuesday, January 14

  • Sushi Workshop - Learn how to make a perfect sushi roll in Viva La Noche’s interactive workshop at Foothills Tasting Room. Bonus: Enjoy unlimited sushi! 6:30 PM

  • MLK Keynote - Bakari Kitwana, executive director of Rap Sessions, will deliver a keynote address honoring the legacy of Dr. King at UNCSA. 7 PM

  • Paint Night - Enjoy a family-friendly, artist-led paint night at the Kernersville Community Recreation Center. 6 PM P.S. If you go, send us a picture of your masterpiece!

Thursday, January 16

  • Craft & Sip - Make winter-themed crafts at Maddie Cakes Bakery while enjoying wine, coffee, and/or dessert! 5-7 PM

  • Open Bike Night - Learn about bicycles and bring your questions to this BeersNGears event at 3407 Luther Street. 7-8:30 PM

  • Cooking Class - Learn to make southern-style cornbread and shepherd’s pie in a cast iron skillet at Southern Home & Kitchen. 6 PM

  • MLK Celebration - Join Forsyth Tech at the Robert L. Strickland Center for a keynote address from Dr. Keith Vereen. 2 PM

  • Book Club - Discuss “Headshot” by Rita Bullwinkel at NCMA Winston-Salem with the Museum’s director! You do not need to have finished the book to participate. 6 PM

Friday, January 17

  • Stage Show - The Little Theatre of Winston-Salem presents “What They Have,” which follows two couples living in Hollywood. Performances run through Sunday.

  • đź’Š Medical: The South Tower at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center is complete, following a $400 million investment that began in 2019. The five-story facility includes a surgical suite, expanded ICU services, and a team specializing in left ventricular assist devices. (WFDD) 

  • 🤝 Volunteer: Winston-Salem and Forsyth County’s Continuum of Care needs your help! On Wednesday, January 29, volunteers will survey our region to count the number of individuals experiencing homelessness.   • 🍛 Opening: Saffron Indian CafĂ© opens tomorrow, January 14, in the Whitaker Square shopping center! The menu features authentic Indian flavors, with items such as lamb chops, paneer tikka masala, various naans, and seekh kebabs.
