New Historical Marker for "The Little Red Factory"

New historical marker on 111 N Chesnut Street

  • What: Richard Joshua Reynolds started R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in 1875 at “The Little Red Factory,” a 4,500 square foot facility he bought for $388.50 - the equivalent of over $11,000 in today’s money.

  • Celebrate: On February 11, city officials and community leaders came together to unveil a new historical marker near the original site of “The Little Red Factory” on 111 N Chestnut Street.

  • Why It Matters: R.J. Reynolds, his family, and his company were instrumental in shaping Winston-Salem into the city it is today.
