☕️ Lovefeasts
What: A church service with hymns, Moravian coffee, and sweet buns. During the Christmas season, lovefeasts include lighting candles!
Origin: The first lovefeast was held by the Moravians in Germany on August 13, 1727.
Participate: Wake Forest University’s lovefeast (free and open to the public) is this Sunday at Wait Chapel. You can also attend a lovefeast at any Moravian church.
🕯 Candle Tea
What: A tour through the Single Brothers’ House where attendees sing carols, watch a candle-making demonstration, and enjoy Moravian coffee and sugar cake.
Origins: Home Moravian Church’s Women’s Fellowship held its first Candle Tea in 1929, making the tradition nearly 100 years old!
Participate: This year’s Candle Tea tickets have already sold out.
⭐ Moravian Stars
What: Decorative stars that typically have 25 or 26 points, although some varieties have up to 110! The city’s largest Moravian star (31 feet tall) sits atop Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist.
Origin: Though their origins are debated, a common story says Moravian stars began as a geometry project in Moravian boarding schools. Today, they’re a symbol of Advent and Christmas.
Where: Buy your own Moravian star at Old Salem, Wilkerson Bakery, Dewey’s Bakery, Salem Kitchen, or Lot 63.
