Big Time Tennis

The Winston-Salem Open is nearly here! The internationally acclaimed tennis tournament will be held August 17-24 at the Wake Forest University Tennis Complex.

  • What: The Winston-Salem Open is the last Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) World Tour 250 event before the US Open. Winston-Salem first hosted the men’s tournament in 2011.

  • Who: This year’s event features 15 of the top 50 tennis players in the world; returning fans may recognize several winners from previous years, like Sebastian Baez (‘23) and Adrian Mannarino (‘22).

  • Amenities: Fans can expect more food trucks, bars, and shaded seating this year. New amenities include live music between matches and Rally Row seating - premium on-court seating featuring VIP hospitality.

  • Special Events: On Community Day (8/17), bring donations to secure one free reserved seat. On Kids Day (also 8/17), kids ages 6-12 can enjoy tennis-related activities with special guests. Check the Winston-Salem Open website for more specials like discounted days, tennis clinics, and more!

Saturday, August 10

  • 2nd Saturday - Bring the family to NCMA Winston-Salem (formerly SECCA) and unleash your creativity! Guests will create a monochromatic piece of art using paper, fabric, paint, and found objects. 11 AM - 2 PM

  • Dogfight the Musical - Theatre Alliance presents Dogfight, an unexpected love story set in the 1960s. Rated R. Runs through August 18.

  • Sidewalk Sale - Save 40-50% on name-brand, warm-weather clothing at Mast General Store. Sale runs through Sunday.

  • Spoil Your Dog - Celebrate National Spoil Your Dog Day at Howlin' at the Moon Bakery! There will be adoptable dogs, ice cream (for both dogs and humans), mini pools, and vendors. 4-7 PM

  • Salem Creek Stomp - Explore Getaway Nature Preserve and investigate the health of Salem Creek by conducting water quality experiments and identifying local wildlife. 10 AM

  • Ribbon Cutting - Celebrate the new mural of The “5” Royales at the Big Winston Warehouse with a live DJ, food trucks, and drinks from Fiddlin’ Fish and Broad Branch Distillery. 1-4 PM

  • Historical Experience - Learn about the Catawba Nation, watch a cultural song and dance performance, and view North Carolina Native American artifacts at Historic Bethabara Park. Free admission. 1:30-4:30 PM

  • Funk Soul Festival - Enjoy delicious soul food while listening to soul music from performers like Paul Anthony at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds. 3:30-11 PM

  • Community Day - Make the last weekend before school starts one for the kids to remember! Join Delta Art Center for face painting, bounce houses, a visit from Bolt, and more. 10 AM - 5 PM

  • Kaleideum After Dark - Discover the science of beer with Radar Brewing, make your own bottle opener, and explore Kaleideum at this 21+ only event. 6:30-9:30 PM

  • Cat Video Fest - Watch over an hour of the latest and best cat videos at Foothills Tasting Room! Ten percent of ticket sales will be donated to Forsyth Humane Society. Starts at dark (~8:30 PM).

  • Vintage Market - Shop vintage clothing from 24+ vendors at ALV Nightclub. Grab food from The Kuya Bear Food and El Veneno food trucks while you shop! 11 AM - 5 PM

  • Baseball - Cheer on the Dash as they take on the Greenville Drive at Truist Stadium! Theme nights include Tailgates & Touchdowns and a rebrand to the Malmö Oat Milkers. Games Saturday and Sunday.

Sunday, August 11

  • Cocktail Class - Join Easytalk at the bar to learn about making sour cocktails. Tickets include 2 full-sized cocktails, a cocktail guide, and bar snacks. 4 PM

  • Line Dancing - Learn beginner line dances at Tucker’s Tap Yard as part of their second anniversary celebration! 2-3:30 PM

  • She Tris Sprint Triathlon - Compete solo or on a relay team in this all-woman triathlon starting at Clemmons West Recreational Association. 8 AM

  • Farm Day - Find premium, locally-raised meats from Rivas Ranch at Wise Man Brewing. Bring the kids along to meet the farm animals! 2-4 PM

Monday, August 12 (First Day of School)

  • Auditions - The Little Theatre of Winston-Salem holds auditions for the first musical of its 90th season, Little Shop of Horrors. Auditions take place August 12 and 13 at 6-8 PM.

  • Mom Mingle - Meet up with other moms at East of Texas! Come solo or bring your kids. 9:30 AM

  • Opening: Sunless Body Spray Tan Studio celebrates its grand opening on Saturday, August 10, at 205 S Stratford Road. The spray tan studio helps guests develop tans without using the harmful UV rays of the sun or tanning beds.

  • Music: SummerFest 2024 is August 10 - September 15. The unique music series from Music Carolina features eleven performances with chamber music, jazz, and more. The opening concert, “Something Wonderful: Rodgers and Hammerstein Songbook,” takes place Saturday, August 10, at Hanesbrands Theatre.

  • Transportation: You may have noticed green electric scooters around the city - Winston-Salem’s new scooter operator, Lime, is placing 200 units throughout the city for public use. Riders can use the scooters 24 hours a day, but scooters cannot be used on sidewalks or greenways.

  • Now Open: Kingdom recently opened at 6000 Meadowbrook Mall Court. The shop specializes in K-pop merchandise, romance books, and baked goods, reflecting the owners' diverse interests.

  • Medicine: Novant Health has been recognized as one of the “Best Places to Work for Disability Inclusion” for the fifth consecutive year by Disability:IN and the American Association of People with Disabilities. The healthcare company achieved a score of 100 on the Disability Equality IndexÂź.

  • New Location: Hive, a lifestyle boutique that opened in 2021, moved to its new space at 131 Oakwood Drive. The locally-owned boutique sells clothing, artwork, home and gift decor, and jewelry.
