Winston-Salem is home to six universities and colleges! Keep reading to learn about the history and stats of our local educational institutions.
Winston-Salem State University | This historically black college/university (HBCU) was founded in 1892 as Slater Industrial Academy. WSSU is known for its highly-rated nursing program, which was established in 1953.

Ranked No. 13 Best HBCU in the U.S. in 2023
Wake Forest University | Home to the Demon Deacons, WFU was founded in 1834 in Wake Forest, NC, before moving to Winston-Salem in 1956. The University is known for its highly-ranked graduate programs in medicine, business, and law.

Ranked No. 3 Best College in North Carolina in 2024
Forsyth Technical Community College | Forsyth Tech started in 1960 with only a handful of programs like automotive mechanics and electronics. The Community College now offers 215 programs across a wide variety of fields.

University of North Carolina School of the Arts | UNCSA was the U.S.ās first public arts conservatory when it was founded in 1965. The School has many reputable alumni, including Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award winners.

Ranked No. 3 Drama School in the World in 2024
Carolina University | Founded in 1945 as Piedmont Bible Institute, CU is a Christian University that merged with six other educational institutions from 2003-2018. The university recently announced it will move its campus to Hanesbrands former headquarters in 2025.

Salem College | Created by the Moravians in 1772, Salem College is the oldest educational institution for women in the U.S. The College is dedicated to elevating and expanding women in Health Leadership.

Men Who Cook - Local male amateur chefs battle it out in SECU Family Houseās annual fundraising event at Legacy Stables. 6:30-8:30 PM*
Winston-Salem Open - Itās tennis time! The tournamentās opening day is Community Day - bring canned goods to secure a free reserved seat. Tournament runs through August 24.*
Kidsā Day - The Winston-Salem Open hosts one of its most popular events! Kids ages 6-12 play in tennis-related activities with special guests at Allegacy Stadium. Registrants receive a complimentary ticket to opening day. 9 AM for ages 6-8, 11 AM for ages 9-12.*
Indoor Concert - Sing along to āHeads Carolina, Tails Californiaā with country singer Jo Dee Messina at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds Arena! 7 PM*
Peter and the Wolf - Take the kids to Kaleideum for the chamber music version of Peter and the Wolf, featuring a woodwind quintet and narrator. Free with museum admission! 3 PM

Calligraphy Class - Join Sip & Script at Joymongers Barrel Hall to learn the basics of calligraphy! Supplies are included. 4:30 PM
Free Screening - Watch Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot at AMC Hanes 12, which recounts the story of how an East Texas community adopted 77 foster kids. 3 PM
Yacht House Party - Anna Yacht and Genesis De Vil host the Totally Y2K Brunch at Joymongers Barrel Hall, featuring performances of 2000s hits. 11 AM - 3 PM
Cocktail Class - Taste Yellow and Green Chartreuse and learn about these liqueursā interesting history at Eastytalk. 4 PM
Moonlight Paddle - Take to the water at Easy Bend River Farms and enjoy refreshments and conversations. Bring your own boat or borrow one at the event! 5-9 PM

Other News
Parents: Help your kids get started with money management by opening a Piedmont Federal Bank Student Smart Start Checking or Youth Savings Account. They can begin learning about the basic fundamentals of banking, like saving, spending, and giving, so they can develop important money skills and invest in their future.*
Arts: Registration for fall classes at Sawtooth School for Visual Art is open! Classes are available for a variety of disciplines like ceramics, painting, woodworking, and more. Register by Friday, August 16, and use the code āfall2024ā for a 5% discount.
Parking: The City of Winston-Salem plans to make changes to city parking, which includes increasing parking rates and finding a new vendor to enforce parking regulations. The changes are due in part to years of decreasing parking revenue. (Triad City Beat)
Expanding: The Vecino Center for Language and Culture is building two more classrooms! The education center launched in fall 2023 and offers classes for learning Spanish, French, and more.
Coming Soon: Pure Sweat Sauna Studio will open at 9th & Trade at Winston Junction in winter 2024, featuring an infrared sauna and cold plunges. Eyeglass retailer Warby Parker will also be opening a new location in Thruway Center this year.
Awards: Nominations are open for the Downtown Excellence Awards, which are given to projects, people, and events that have brought excellence to Downtown Winston-Salem. Nominations are due by Monday, September 9.
New Mead-ieval Hall
Have you heard? Wandering Sun Meadery opened its second location in downtown Winston-Salem!
About: Based out of Madison, NC, Wandering Sun Meadery is the first producer of mead in the Triad. The family-owned and operated business makes its mead using all-natural wildflower honey from central Carolina.
What is Mead? This fermented beverage is made from honey! You probably recognize the name from medieval-themed shows or books, but mead predates the medieval period and might be the worldās oldest alcoholic drink.
What to Expect: The Winston-Salem location, Wandering Sun Mead Hall, will be themed after a cozy medieval tavern. Due to the drinkās versatility, the mead selection will range from sweet to dry.
