🎾 It’s Time For Tennis

The Winston-Salem Open kicks off this Saturday! From August 16–23, some of the world’s top tennis players will compete right here in Winston-Salem, at the Wake Forest University Tennis Complex.

  • What: The Winston-Salem Open is the last Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) World Tour 250 event before the US Open. Winston-Salem first hosted the men’s tournament in 2011.

  • Who: This year’s event features 12 of the top 50 tennis players in the world; returning fans may recognize several winners from previous years, like Lorenzo Sonego (‘24) and Sebastian Baez (‘23).

  • The Experience: Expect food trucks, themed drinks, shaded seating, and “On-Court VIP” seating.

  • Special Events: Each day of the tournament features special discounts/events, such as Kids Day (Aug 16), Educator Appreciation Day (Aug 17), and College Night (Aug 18).

  • Superhero Concert - Salem Band performs music from your favorite superhero movies at Salem Square! Free to attend. Rescheduled from August 5 due to rain. 7 PM

  • Baseball Games - Watch the Dash take on the Asheville Tourists at Truist Stadium all week! Theme nights include ‘90s Country Night, the Tobacco Beetles rebrand, and Dinos at the Dash.

  • Tennis Social - Has the Winston-Salem Open put tennis on your mind? Head to Ski and Tennis Station to meet fellow tennis players, watch live demos, and connect with industry guests. 4-7 PM

  • Author Talk - Dr. Karen Benjamin, author of “Good Parents, Better Homes & Great Schools,” discusses how housing segregation was sold to the public at Knollwood Baptist Church. 11:30 AM

Wednesday, August 13

  • Comedy Show - Enjoy a night of stand-up comedy at Bar Nola for free—no joke! 7 PM

  • Free Art Class - Use watercolors to paint a meadow butterfly at the Generations Center. Registration required. 1 PM

  • Beer & Brass - Celebrate Oktoberfest early at Footnote Coffee! Enjoy warm pretzels and Foothills’ Oktoberfest brew while listening to The Ardmore Brass Quintet! 6 PM

Thursday, August 14

  • Bookish DIY - Design a custom tote bag or mini bookshelf at Byrdhouse Books! 7 PM

  • Line Dancing - Learn boot-scootin’ moves at Breathe Cocktail Lounge! Lesson at 7 PM followed by open dance at 8:30 PM.

  • Paint Your Pet - Create a cartoon painting of your pet at Wine & Design! The Cordial Cowboy will be serving NA and alcohol alternative drinks. 7 PM

  • Paired Dinner - Enjoy mussels and fries paired with wine at The Caviste. Seatings from 5:30-7:30 PM.

Friday, August 15

  • Souljam Session - Head to Robert Hall for a live performance from Souljam, drinks from Thirsty Buffalo, food from Gianno’s. Bonus: Your ticket comes with a free drink! 7 PM - 12 AM

  • Free Outdoor Screening - Watch the cult classic “(500) Days of Summer” at Foothills Tasting Room. Movie starts at dusk.

  • ⚽️ Sports: Soccer is back at Wake Forest! Don’t miss the home openers—Women on Aug. 14 and Men on Aug. 21. Both teams are national powerhouses, with the women reaching the College Cup last year and the men winning the 2024 ACC title!*

  • 💰 Funding: North Carolina awarded $500,000 to the Piedmont Triad Regional Council for the Piedmont Greenway, a planned 19-mile shared-use path that will connect Salem Lake to Summerfield in Guilford County. The grant money was allocated for Phases 1 and 2 of Piedmont Greenway’s Triad Park/Reedy Fork segment.

  • 📅 Save the Date: Calling all entrepreneurs! Converge South, a two-day entrepreneurship conference, takes place September 4 & 5 at Biotech Place. Attendees can expect investor keynotes, one-on-one investor meetings, and a startup expo featuring 75 companies.
